The New York Yankees got a beauty of a game from Ivan Nova on their way to a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in the Bronx on Wednesday night. Nova worked eight innings, giving up just four hits and one earned run for his seventh win of the season.
Through 11 starts this season, Nova has been up and down, mostly struggling in his starts. He allowed 18 earned runs in four starts prior to this one. He did beat Tampa Bay earlier this season, allowing two runs in seven innings on May 8.
Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano both hit solo home runs to give the Yankees an early lead. Nick Swisher and Eric Chavez also drove in runs in the win.
New York now trails Baltimore by just half a game in the American League East. The Orioles won on Wednesday night as well, beating the Red Sox by a final score of 2-1.
The Yankees have one more against the Rays in this series. New York has now won three straight and five of their last six.
