The Yankees entered Saturday night hoping to win both games of a doubleheader against the Tigers after defeating Detroit 9-4 earlier in the day. Following a walk-off sacrifice fly by catcher Omir Santos that secured Detroit's 4-3 victory, it's safe to say things didn't go as planned.
It was a back and forth game for both teams, featuring a rain delay, the ejection of New York manager Joe Girardi and two home runs by Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera.
Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long were ejected in the top of the seventh inning for arguing with home plate umpire Bob Davidson. Two innings later, with the Yankees trailing 3-2, Detroit closer Jose Valverde walked first baseman Mark Teixeira with the bases loaded. New York reliever Boone Logan was unable to maintain the newly tied game in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing a sacrifice fly that allowed Brennan Boesch to score.
The loss drops the Yankees to 28-24 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 25-28.
