The New York Yankees have placed starting pitcher CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 1 left groin strain, the team announced on Wednesday.

Sabathia is expected to miss two starts and return to the team following the All-Star break. This is his first DL assignment since joining the Yankees, and he didn't agree to it without protest.

"I know what he wants to do, but this is what we're going to do," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "He's a competitor, he wants to be out there, he feels like he can pitch with it right now. But we're not going to mess with it."

An MRI taken on Tuesday revealed a strain in Sabathia's adductor muscle, which he suffered during the fourth inning of his last start Friday against the Chicago White Sox. He mentioned the issue to Yankees trainers after feeling discomfort during a bullpen session on Tuesday.
