Yankees Transactions: Eduardo Nunez Sent To Minors, Eric Chavez Activated

The New York Yankees sent Eduardo Nunez down to the minor leagues (Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) on Friday and activated Eric Chavez (via LodHud Yankees Blog Twitter).

Nunez is batting .294 with six stolen bases, but defensively he has struggled, The Yankees have played him at three infield positions and in the outfield so far this season. Yankees manager Joe Girardi wants Nunez to get back to playing shortstop on an everyday basis.

"We talked about it and said, maybe we're asking this kid to do too much at this time in his career," Girardi said. "... Our thought is, this kid is going to be an everyday shortstop at some point." (via Bombers Beat)

Nunez committed two errors (one throwing, one fielding) in Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He was taken out of the game in the sixth inning for Jayson Nix, who Girardi says will be the new backup shortstop and second baseman.
