New York Yankees starter Phil Hughes was pulled with a stiff back in the fourth inning and Delmon Young and Miguel Cabrera broke through for key RBIs as the Detroit Tigers lead the Yankees, 2-0, through six innings in Game 3 of the ALCS.
After surrendering a solo home run to Young and a walk to Andy Dirks, Hughes was pulled with an apparent injury — later revealed to be a stiff back — and was replaced by David Phelps, who held the Tigers at just one run in the frame.
The Yankees finally broke through for a hit against Justin Verlander, as Ichiro Suzuki's one-out single in the fourth inning stopped Verlander's streak of 10 batters retired. Suzuki's hit is the Yankees' only knock of the night through six innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Phelps was unable to keep the Tigers' offense in check, as Miguel Cabrera broke through for a double to deep right center field to score Quintin Berry from second base after Berry stole second easily on Phelps. After Phelps was taken out by Yankees manager Joe Girardi, relievers Clay Rapada and Cody Eppley were able to keep the damage to just one run.
Boone Logan was also able to escape a bases-loaded jam with one out in the sixth inning as he induced Cabrera into a sharply hit ground ball to third baseman Eric Chavez, who started a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
