After six innings in the Bronx, the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles are tied at 1-1 in another low-scoring duel.
Nate McLouth ignited two scoring threats in his first two at-bats, but in each instance, he was stranded at third and the O's came away with no runs in the first and third inning. Starter Phil Hughes dodged a bullet both times, but in McLouth's third at-bat, he did it all himself. The Baltimore lead-off man started the fifth with a solo shot over the right-field wall. Hughes shook off the opening run of the game and quickly retired the side in the fifth. He cruised through the sixth and then retired the first two men in the seventh before Joe Girardi made the call to the bullpen.
The Yankees wouldn't wait long to even things up, as they finally broke through against Joe Saunders in the bottom of the sixth. The captain, Derek Jeter, led off the inning with a double to right. He was promptly moved to third on a sacrifice by Ichiro Suzuki, and scampered home on a bouncing ball to the right side by Robinson Cano. Baltimore second baseman Ryan Flaherty took the easy out at first and did not attempt to come home, but the run chased Saunders and forced Buck Showalter to make the call for Tommy Hunter. The O's reliever struck out Alex Rodriguez to strand Mark Teixeira on second and end the inning in a 1-1 tie.
