The Wednesday Video: Roger Maris' 61st Home Run

October 1st is the 50th anniversary of Roger Maris breaking Babe Ruth's single-season home run record. It was the last game of the season, against the Boston Red Sox. Maris hit the record-setting homer off Tracy Stallard (who would go on to pitch for the New York Mets in 1963 and '64, putting up 6-17 and 10-20 records for the hapless expansion-era Amazin's). Maris' solo homer was the only run of the game, and the victory was the 109th of the year for the New York Yankees. The ball was caught by 19-year-old Sal Durante. Here's a video of the whole at-bat from the WPIX channel 11 broadcast, with Red Barber's understated call.
