Bartolo Colon had his finest outing since his AL Cy Young Award-winning season in 2005 back on May 30 against the Oakland Athletics when he tossed a four-hit shutout. The New York Yankees will be hoping for something similar this afternoon when they complete a three-game series against the A's at Yankee Stadium (1:05 p.m.).
Colon, who has lost his last three starts, pitched well his last time out against Tampa Bay, allowing three runs (one earned) and five hits with nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Some defensive miscues late did him in, as he fell to 6-6 on the year to go along with a 3.34 ERA.
The Yankees have fallen three games behind Boston in the American League East, though they have a 5.5-game lead over Anaheim and 6.5 over Tampa Bay for the American League wild-card.
Left-hander Gio Gonzalez (9-6, 2.33 ERA) will be on the mound for Oakland today.
