The New York Yankees have the 28th selection of the second round, 88th overall, when the 2011 MLB Draft resumes today at noon ET (watch live stream on mlb.com). The Yankees used their first pick Monday night, the 51st overall selection of the draft, on high school outfielder/third baseman Dante Bichette Jr. New York obtained the 51st pick as compensation when right-handed pitcher Javier Vazquez signed as a free agent with the Florida Marlins.
Here are the Yankees recent second-round selections:
- 2010 -- Angelo Gumbs, SS, Torrance HS, 82nd overall (RGCL Yankees, Rookie League)
- 2009 -- J.R. Murphy (supplemental pick), C, Pendelton School, 76th overall (Class A Charleston)
- 2008 -- Scott Biddle, RHP, Univ. of Mississippi, 75th overall (Did Not Sign)
- 2007 -- Austin Romine, C, El Toro HS, 94th overall (Class AA Trenton)

There are still many talented players available. In fact, MLB.com says only 35 of the players ranked in its top 50 were selected among the first 60 picks. Rounds 2 thru 30 will be held today, and the draft will complete on Wednesday with rounds 31-50.
