Injury Slows Countdown To Derek Jeter's 3,000th Hit

Derek Jeter got the 2,994th base hit of his illustrious career Monday night, but his chase to become the first player to get 3,000 hits as a New York Yankee has hit a snag. Jeter left Monday’s game against the Cleveland Indians in the fifth inning with a sore right calf.

No word from the Yankees yet as to the severity of Jeter’s injury. The hope has been that Jeter, now six hits shy of the 3,000-hit plateau, would be able to reach the milestone during the current home stand. The Yankees play the Texas Rangers in a three-game series before heading to Chicago to face the Cubs in interleague play.

Jeter was 1-for-3 Monday night before exiting the game. He is now batting .260 on the season. He led off the game with a single, grounded into a fielder’s choice in the second inning and flied out in the fifth.
