Mariners 4, Yankees 3: Yankees Let One Slip Away

The New York Yankees had a 3-0 lead halfway through Friday night's game against the Seattle Mariners, but could not hold it. The Mariners came back for a 4-3 victory in the first game of what will be a nine-game West Coast road trip for New York.

Starting pitcher A.J. Burnett surrendered two runs in the fifth inning and manager Joe Girardi then turned the game over to the bullpen. Boone Logan and Luis Ayala could not hold the lead, though, surrendering two sixth-inning runs. Ayala (1-1) took the loss.

Seattle went in front after it loaded the bases against Logan and Ayala in the sixth. Brendan Ryan hit into a fielder's choice to tie the game, and Ichiro Suzuki plated Miguel Olivo with the go-ahead run on a bouncer to short.

Mark Teixeira homered for the Yankees. The series continues tonight with Ivan Nova pitching for the Yankees and Felix Hernandez for Seattle.
