One night after a marathon 15-inning victory over the Baltimore Orioles that severely depleted an already injury-ravaged New York Yankees bullpen, New York hands the ball to CC Sabathia Thursday night.
The Yankees really need their ace to pitch like one tonight, as much of their bullpen could use the rest. Sabathia, though, has struggled of late and lost for the second time in three starts on Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, who hit him for six runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, dropping him to 3-3 on the year to go along with a 3.47 ERA.
Who pitches for Baltimore is an open question. Jeremy Guthrie, tonight's scheduled starter, was forced into action in the 15th inning Wednesday night. He still want to pitch Thursday night, however.
"I am going to talk to Buck," Guthrie said. "I told him I saved everything I had through limited warm-up pitches. I just tried to work down in the zone quick. I'm ready to go [Thursday], so we'll see. I have to go talk to him first."
