2011 MLB Salaries: Yankees Spend The Most, But Others Are Catching Up

USA Today is out with its list of Major League Baseball team salaries, and we are once again hit over the head with the obvious fact that the New York Yankees spend a lot of money. For the fourth straight season the Yankees are the only team above the $200 million mark in payroll, checking in at $202.6 million.

The real surprise is that the Yankees are basically holding the line on salaries as they are right about where they have been in each of the past four season. It seems to be everyone else who is spending more money. The Philadelphia Phillies check in $172.9 million and the Boston Red Sox at $161.7 million, the first time two teams other than the Yankees have been above $150 million at one time.

In all, there are 12 teams spending above $100 million in player salaries. That is more than ever before.

Despite their financial difficulties the New York Mets are seventh in payroll at $118.8 million. You have to wonder if the Mets will be trying to dump salary before the season is over.
