Let's start off by saying we have forgive Lance Berkman of the St. Louis Cardinals for getting a little carried awayafter watching Albert Pujols go 5-for-6 with three home runs, six RBI and 14 total bases in the Cardinals' 16-7 Game 3 win over the Texas Rangers in Saturday's Game 3 of the World Series.
↵Berkman just could not contain himself after watching the display, saying Pujols was "better than Babe Ruth."
↵↵
↵↵"He's a better hitter than Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson and there's no doubt about it," said Lance Berkman, who is finishing his first season with Pujols in St. Louis. "I'm dead serious. Babe Ruth, as great as he was, played in an all-white league. Now we have the best talent pool we've ever had and he's doing it in that environment. He's the greatest."
↵
Ahh, Lance! I know there are white specks -- or maybe more than specks -- in that beard of yours. And I know Pujols' performance was a historic one by a historic player. I will even give you that it was better than Jackson's three swings World Series game. But, Pujols better than the Babe? Based on what?
↵No disrespect to Pujols, one of the greatest hitters in the game, but "better than Babe" is over the top. Simply, it's an impossible comparison that should never be made. No one has ever dominated or changed the game of baseball the way Ruth did, and that should never be forgotten. No matter what anyone thinks of the era or the competition. We can't blame Lance for being excited, though. So, we'll let him off the hook.
