Hal Steinbrenner Defends Brian Cashman

'Drummed up drama?' Around the New York Yankees? Would that ever happen? I mean, seriously, Hal Steinbrenner! C'mon, man!

↵

The Yankee owner said that is exactly what is going on in regards to speculation that general manager Brian Cashman -- who has had an interesting, awkward off-season -- won't return to the Yankees after this season.

↵

"I think Brian does a great job," he said, according to the New York Post. "We need to sit and talk, but now is not the time for that."

↵

Cashman was overruled by Steinbrenner recently on the signing of free-agent reliever Rafael Soriano. He had a public spat with Derek Jeter over a new contract, then talked about Jeter eventually moving to center field. He failed to land Cliff Lee.

↵

It's been an odd off-season for Cashman, including rappelling off a buiilding for charity.

↵

"Am I trying to get fired? Absolutely not," Cashman said.

↵

"What have I done that's so explosive? What have I done that's so controversial? I did nothing improper or wrong or controversial or explosive."

↵

Well, that's a matter of opinion. In New York, around the Yankees, just about anything can become controversial or explosive.
