Morning Coffee! Cliff Lee To ... Philadelphia

Good morning, New York sports fans! There is both good news and bad on the local sports scene this morning.

  • Since we're so curmudgeonly, we will start with the bad news. It is the biggest, anyway. While you were sleeping Cliff Lee spurned the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers to go back to Philadelphia. Obviously, it seems he never really wanted the Yankees. Lee took a five-year, $120 million deal to go to Philly, less than the Yankees and Rangers had offered. It is still more money than Lee will ever spend, but I do have to give him credit. He did something free agents don't do often enough, in my opinion. He left money on the table to go and play in the place where he really wanted to be. I can't be upset with him for that. Pinstripe Alley will have plenty of reaction throughout the day.

  • It was a sloppy, ugly game but the New York Giants got a victory they needed Monday when they topped the Brett Favre-less Minnesota Vikings, 21-3. Now it is on to Sunday's NFC East showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles.

  • The New York Jets have suspended strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi without pay for the rest of the season after his blatant trip of Miami's Nolan Carroll Sunday. I still say Alosi should have been fired.

  • The New York Islanders continued their losing ways Monday, dropping their sixth straight game. This time it was a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of the Nashville Predators. Quick question: Are the 5-18-5 Islanders using real NHL players?
