The 2012 MLS All-Star Game will see the MLS All-Stars rematch with European champions Chelsea at PPL Park on July 25. Chelsea has already played two matches in the 2012 World Football Challenge during their preseason U.S. tour, one of which was at Yankee Stadium (1-1 draw vs. Paris St. Germain).
New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry was named to the MLS All-Star First XI for his fine campaign so far this season (10 goals, six assists). Red Bulls defender Heath Pearce also made the First XI but was injured and will miss the match. Due to the collective bargaining agreement, a total of 32 players are named All-Stars. A beneficiary of this agreement was Red Bulls striker Kenny Cooper, who was snubbed for the active roster despite 13 goals (2nd in MLS). Cooper will receive an All-Star bonus for being named to the inactive roster.
The MLS All-Stars defeated Chelsea in 2006 at the All-Star Game which was played at Toyota Park. Dwayne De Rosario scored the only goal of the match in a 1-0 win for the MLS side.
