The New York Red Bulls failed in their bid to earn a franchise record sixth consecutive victory Wednesday night. The Red Bulls, however, did earn a point with a 1-1 draw against Chivas USA in an MLS match at Red Bull Arena.
This was a wide-open match dominated for large stretches by New York (8-3-3), which outshot Chivas USA, 18-7, and possessed the ball for more than 55 percent of the match.
After a scoreless first half, however, New York found itself trailing early in the second half after former Red Bull star Juan Pablo Angel blasted a volley past Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara off assists from Rauwshan McKenzie and Blair Gavin.
New York equalized in the 56th minute. Brandon Barklage played a beautiful ball down the sideline for Dane Richards, who was able to find Kenny Cooper on the cross in front of the Chivas USA goal. Cooper pushed the shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. Cooper is now tied for the league lead in goals with Chris Wondolowski of the San Jose Earthquakes.
New York dominated action late in the match, but was unable to find the game-winning goal. The Red Bulls will not play another league match until June 17 vs. Chicago.
Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez, out for several games with injuries, returned to the lineup for New York.
