The New York Red Bulls received news today regarding forward Juan Agudelo that they had been fearing. Agudelo will undergo surgery today to repair a torn medial meniscus in his left knee, an injury he suffered recently while with the United States Under-23 Men’s National Team participating in the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Qualifying Tournament.
Agudelo, 19, was hurt during a 6-0 United States victory over Cuba.
Agudelo played one game for the Red Bulls this season, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in a season-opening loss to FC Dallas. He then departed for internatonal duty.
The surgery was to be performed by Dr. Riley Williams at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Agudelo could be sidelined for up to six weeks.
Agudelo played in 27 games for the Red Bulls in 2011, with 12 starts. He finished the season with six goals and two assists.
The Red Bulls return to action on Saturday, March 31 when they host the expansion Montreal Impact at 4 p.m. ET (TV: MSG).
