Before I start my article on the New York Red Bulls I wanted to say a few words about today's tragedy in Russia. I love covering the Red Bulls, and on occasion writing about football and baseball, but over the past few years hockey has become my love as a fan. I have been a hockey fan since the age of 5 and some of the men who died today were stars when I became a big fan of the game. Karlis Skrastins and Ruslan Salei spent time on my favorite team, the Colorado Avalanche, and I will deeply miss them along with many of the other guys I have followed over the years. We also cannot forget the lives lost of the crew members who were on board, may each and every one of you rest in peace.
Off the depressing note here are some on the main stories coming out of Red Bull Arena:
The Red Bulls finally get back on the field: With the Red Bulls August 28th match with the Los Angeles Galaxy being postponed due to Hurricane Irene the last match for the Red Bulls was August. 20, a 2-2 tie with the New England Revolution. This means when the Red Bulls host the Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday there will have been 21 days between games. Before the game the Red Bulls will have a 9/11 tribute since Sunday will be 10 years since the 9/11 attacks.
International play proves not to be memorable for Red Bulls participants: Despite the fact Red Bull goaltending has had many downs this season Buona Coundoul was the only bright spot for the Red Bulls in international play. Coundoul led Senegal to a 2-0 victory over the Congo. Rafa Marquez also played in victory but did not record a point, while team USA, who had Juan Agudelo, Tim Ream, and Roy Miller on their roster, lost a 1-0 shocker to Costa Rica. Dane Richards was on the Jamaican team who lost 5-2 to Ecuador but did not appear in the match.
