Red Bulls 1, Sounders 0: Agudelo's Goal Gives New York Season-Opening Victory

The New York Red Bulls opened their 2011 MLS season with a 1-0 victory Saturday night over the Seattle Sounders. Juan Agudelo, New York’s 18-year-old striker, scored the game’s only goal with about 20 minutes left to help his team earn the full points in its first game of the 2011 season.

Agudelo’s goal came when he ran onto a Teemu Tainio ball over the top ball from the back, outmuscled Seattle’s Leo Gonzalez for control of the ball and struck a perfect shot just inside the left post.

Seattle (0-2) nearly tied the game in stoppage time. Fredy Montero nailed a free kick that was parried away by Sutton, and the rebound was hit high and wide by Lamar Neagle. Seattle suffered its second 1-0 loss of the season after falling at home to the Los Angeles Galaxy to open the MLS season on Tuesday.

The Red Bulls travel to Columbus next Saturday to face the Crew at 4 p.m.
