The Wednesday Video: Rangers And Maple Leafs In Old-Time Hockey Brawl

The New York Rangers finally get to play a home game on Thursday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the revamped Garden. But 40 years ago, these two teams met in the playoffs and staged a giant brawl, which just kept on going. This one came with a twist, though, as Vic Hadfield tossed Leafs goalie Bernie Parent's mask into the crowd, and though the police were called into help, the Garden Faithful wouldn't throw it back. Though the announcers opined that Parent would most likely finish the game without wearing a mask (anybody old enough to remember those days?), Jacques Plante came in to relieve Parent. But the fighting didn't let up, as Plante squared off with Eddie Giacomin when the benches emptied later in the game. Toronto won the game, 4-1, but the Rangers won the series before being eliminated by Chicago. Warning: The following video is over nine minutes long (but it's worth every second).
