New York Mets fans will have a chance to say goodbye to an old enemy this weekend at Shea Stadium, as Chipper Jones and the Atlanta Braves visit New York for the final time this year.
In Jones' 19-year career, he's thrived off the jeers he's heard in Queens, routinely killing the Mets in the postseason (such as the 1999 NLCS) while maintaining a less-than-friendly relationship with Mets fans. He's hit .314 with 49 home runs against the Mets, and even named one of his sons Shea after all the success he had in the team's' old park. Jones is now set to retire, and he's set to go out with a playoff bid. The third baseman seems rejuvenated with a .304 average this year, and the Braves have a five game lead in the race for one of two Wild Card berths.
Jones' farewell tour begins against Jonathon Niese, who has had quality starts in five of his last six outings including an eight-inning, one-run outing against Atlanta on Aug. 12, but has come out a hard-luck loser several times, going 3-3 in that stretch. He'll face Paul Maholm, who pitched a brilliant three-hit complete game shutout against the Mets on Aug. 8 but is coming off a two-inning, seven-run shelling against Philadelphia in his last start.
