Mets Vs. Nationals Update: Washington Leads After 5 Innings, 5-1

The Washington Nationals lead the New York Mets, 5-1, after five innings at Citi Field in New York.

Mets starter Collin McHugh kept the Nationals off the board for two innings before five runs in the third and fourth. The Nationals began their offensive barrage in the third inning behind home runs from Kurt Suzuki (his fifth homer of the year) and Ryan Zimmerman (his 21st) to take a 3-0 lead. They tacked on two more runs in the fourth with an Ian Desmond two-run homer to extend the lead to 5-0.

McHugh exited the game after only four innings.

The Mets slightly chipped away in the bottom of the fourth with a Scott Hairston solo home run, his 16th of the year, but that homer is all the offense the Mets have been able to muster thus far.

The Hairston home run is the only scuff on an otherwise solid start from Washington starter Gio Gonzalez. Gonzalez has allowed only one run on three hits in five innings of work.
