The New York Mets have acquired catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later in a waiver-wire trade on Tuesday.
Shoppach was placed on waivers by the Red Sox on Aug. 10 and cleared waivers on Tuesday morning, opening him up to be dealt to another team. The 32-year-old catcher was signed to a one-year contract by Boston this past offseason and was acting as the club's backup.
