Mets Vs. Nationals Final Score: Washington Outlasts New York, 7-6, In 12 Innings

The New York Mets fell to the Washington Nationals, 7-6, in 12 innings Tuesday night in the opening game of a three-game series at Nationals Park. Bryce Harper hit a single to left field off Elvin Ramirez (0-1) in the bottom of the 12th inning to score Jesus Flores and give Washington the win.

Chris Young made his first start of the season for the Mets after undergoing shoulder surgery last season. Young gave up two earned runs off six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in five innings. Omar Quintanilla committed a throwing error on a Ryan Zimmerman single in the fifth that put the Nationals up 3-0 after five innings.

The Mets responded with solo home runs from Jordany Valdespin and David Wright in the sixth inning to pull within one run, 3-2. Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann was pulled after the inning. He gave up five hits and no walks while striking out five.

Andres Torres scored Valdespin and Scott Hairston on an eighth inning double to put the Mets up 4-3 late in the game, but Ian Desmond responded with an RBI single off Bobby Parnell in the bottom of the inning that would ultimately send the game to extra innings.

Ross Detwiler (4-3) earned the win for the Nats, though he gave up a Hairston home run in the top of the 12th inning that gave the Mets a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Game 2 is all set for Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. The Mets Jeremy Hefner (1-2, 5.60 ERA) will take on Edwin Jackson (1-3, 3.17).
