NBA Awards 2012: Tyson Chandler To Be Announced As Defensive Player Of The Year

On a day when just about everything surrounding the New York Knicks has the feel of doom and gloom, a ray of sunshine fights through the clouds.

The Knicks have announced they're holding a 3 p.m. ET press conference to celebrate Tyson Chandler winning the Defensive Player of the Year Award, according to Howard Beck.

In a season marred by injuries and a coach resigning, New York can take solace in the fact it signed one of the preeminent big men in the NBA.

Chandler has been everything the Knicks could have dreamed of and more, shooting over 67 percent from the field while patrolling the paint and altering shots.

He's the first Knick to ever win the award, stealing it away from Dwight Howard's grasp. Chandler is the main reason along with Mike Woodson that New York improved from 27th in scoring defense to 11th in just a year.

While the season looks to be coming to an ugly close soon, the future appears bright for the Knicks.
