Good morning, New York sports fans! Let's take our first look at the local sports scene on a wintry Wednesday here in the Northeast.

- The New York Knicks very nearly pulled off a post-Christmas miracle Tuesday night. The Knicks whittled a 22-point deficit against the Miami heat down to three points with two minutes to play, but could not get closer as the Heat won, 106-98. ↵
- Syracuse edged Providence, 81-74, in the Big East Conference basketball openers for both teams. ↵
- The Syracuse football program is prepping for Thursday's Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. The university is apparently considering un-retiring the No. 44 jersey worn by Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little. Sorry, I don't like it. The jersey was retired for a reason and un-retiring it is a cheap recruiting trick. ↵
- Four New York Giants and three New York Jets were named to the 2011 Pro Bowl. How anyone thinks Giants center Shaun O'Hara, who has played just six games and has not played well in those, is a Pro Bowler is beyond me. That's a reputation vote. ↵
- If you have not yet voted in the Top 5 New York Sports Stories of the Year poll, you still have time. ↵
