New York Jets OTA 2012: Rex Ryan Not Concerned By LaRon Landry's Absence

LaRon Landry has been noticeably absent from New York Jets OTAs so far. The veteran safety was known to work out on his own while with the Washington Redskins, but he vowed to take part in at least some of the Jets' voluntary workouts when he signed with the team in March. Head coach Rex Ryan, however, said he wasn't concerned by Landry's absence in comments distributed to the media Thursday.

"These are voluntary-type things," Ryan said. "Obviously, I think we're so used to it over the two previous seasons and even this year we probably had as many guys in our offseason program as anybody, even though it's voluntary. We probably had as many guys in our program this year and the first two [years] as anybody in the league. But it is a voluntary-type thing. I'm excited to coach the people that are here and they've done a tremendous job so far."

Player participation in OTAs is technically optional, so it is unlikely you'll ever catch any coach publicly bad mouth a player for playing hooky. What goes on behind closed doors is another matter.
