2012 NFL Draft Round 1 Grades: Mel Kiper Questions New York Jets

When you starting handing out NFL Draft grades it seems like everyone wants to know what ESPN analyst Mel Kiper thinks of what their team did. Well, New York Jets fans, Kiper is not enamored with the Jets’ selection of Quinton Coples with the 16th pick of the first round.

Kiper wrote:

“I just found this pick really curious with Melvin Ingram still available. The Jets needed a 3-4 pass-rusher but went with Coples, who’s a one-gap penetrator but figures to work inside more. The Jets may have plans to mix some packages a little bit more (I won’t doubt Rex Ryan’s creativity), but Coples is also a guy who needs to show more consistent effort. Ingram plays with big-time intensity. The Jets must have a plan in mind, I just don’t think they got the better player.”

There you have it Jets fans. I am guessing Kiper is not alone in thinking the Jets might have been better served by grabbing Melvin Ingram, the outside linebacker from South Carolina, in that spot.
