In the latest SB Nation 2012 NFL mock draft by Ryan Van Bibber, the New York Jets are linked to defensive end/linebacker Courtney Upshaw with their first pick.
Upshaw is an Alabama product and a very talented one at that. After struggling mightily the past few seasons to get any pressure on the quarterback without blitzing, this pick would make a ton of sense.
The Jets desperately need to bring someone off the edge who scares opponents. Upshaw has a rare blend of size and speed that usually proves tough to defend.
In 2011, New York tied with Pittsburgh for 17th in the league with 35 sacks as a unit. While that isn't terrible, the fact Aaron Maybin led the team with six is troubling to say the least.
Upshaw also comes into the defense with a vast knowledge of the 3-4 scheme the Jets employ. After being coached by Nick Saban with the Crimson Tide, Upshaw's learning curve will be a lot less severe than most rookies.
