Jets' Rex Ryan: 'Our Defense Let Us Down'

Losing is always hard to stomach, and New York Jets coach Rex Ryan found the way Sunday’s 34-24 loss to the Oakland Raiders unfolded to be especially tough to take.

This thing stings. You have 439 yards on offense and lose the game. Unbelievable!" Ryan said. "Two hundred thirty four yards (rushing allowed), 7.8 a carry. I’ve never had that happen in my life, but it just happened.

“It wasn’t our offense. Our defense let us down, clearly. Gave up way too many big plays.”

The Raiders ran for 234 yards, as Ryan mentioned, with Darren McFadden (171 yards on 19 carries) doing most of the damage. To be sure, Ryan is not used to watching his defense get man-handled like that.

“Obviously McFadden had a huge game,” Ryan said. “Against a kid like that you better set the edges. He outran us and made some great plays.”

“I don’t know what it is. Communication, just getting beat physically. We’ll look at it all.”
