Stevie Johnson’s mocking of Plaxico Burress by pretending to shoot himself after the Buffalo Bills wide receiver scored a touchdown Sunday against the New York Jets drew a costly unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Johnson was regretful after the Bills lost, 28-24.
Johnson called his celebration “stupid.”
It was very stupid of me going through that and I feel like I cost our team the win by doing that. It was a bad decision. It’s irrelevant whether or not I rehearsed it or not. At the end of the day, it cost our team seven points. I have to apologize to everyone and talk to coach. I can’t be doing that. I need to be mature about the situation.
Buffalo coach Chan Gailey said Johnson exercised “bad judgment.”
I don’t think he’s a bad person ,whatsoever. I think he’s a good person. I think he has some bad judgment at critical times. I’ve got to help him get over that. We cannot have that. It hurts our football team.
