Favre: Jets Asked If He Would Come Back Before Picking Mark Sanchez

The New York Jets only drafted Mark Sanchez because now-Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre said he wasn’t interested in returning.

Well, according to Favre, that’s how it happened anyway.

“Here I was, pushing 40 with a torn biceps tendon,” Favre said Thursday in a conference call with the New York media. "I felt like that was the wake-up call I was looking for, if you will. They asked if I wanted to come back. I was like, ‘I don’t want to go through surgery and all that stuff.’ "

It seems Jets head coach Rex Ryan remembers it a bit differently, however.

On Monday, Ryan said he would have recruited Favre if they hadn’t secured Sanchez. Asked if he could’ve been persuaded by Ryan to return to the Jets, Favre said: “Quite possibly, sure. I knew the potential of that team.”

Either way, Monday night should be fun.
