After missing out on the postseason, both the New York Jets and New York Giants will draft in the first 20 picks of the 2013 NFL Draft. The Jets, by virtue of their 6-10 record, will have the ninth overall selection while the Giants, after finishing 9-7, will pick 19th.
At No. 9 overall, Iyer sees the Jets selecting defensive end Barkevious Mingo from LSU. Mingo recorded 28 total tackles this season for the Tigers, including 8.5 tackles for a loss. Mingo also recorded 4.5 sacks, three pass break ups and one forced fumble this season.
About Mingo, Iyer wrote:
The Jets need more bark and bite in Rex Ryan's aggressive 3-4 defense. Enter Mingo, who is an explosive pass rusher and can stuff the run, too.
With the No. 19 pick in the first round, Iyer believes the Giants will also go defensive, selecting defensive end Ezekiel Ansah from BYU. During his senior season, Ansah recorded 62 tackles, 13 of them for a loss, as well as 4.5 sacks. Ansah also intercepted a pass and forced a fumble in 2012.
Iyer had this to say about the projected selection of the BYU Cougar:
The Giants can't pass up pass rushers with freakish athletic skills-Ansah (6-5, 270) qualifies. With Osi Umenyiora likely moving on, Ansah would fill a hole in the rotation.
