Does Rex Ryan really have any other choice now than to name Greg McElroy the starting quarterback for the New York Jets?
McElroy, the third-string quarterback active only because Tim Tebow was sidelined with fractured ribs, came off the bench Sunday to rescue the Jets season, throwing a one-yard pass to Jeff Cumberland for the only touchdown in a 7-6 victory that gave the Jets (5-7) a flicker of hope for the rest of the season.
After the game Ryan would not name his starter for next week's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"I’ll let you guys know who’s going to be the quarterback when I’m ready," Ryan said. "We’ll evaluate our situation as the week goes on."
Seriously, though, can Ryan do anything other than start McElroy after hooking the ineffective Mark Sanchez (10-for-21, 97 yards)?
"Right now I’m just happy with the win. I believe in Mark. I believe in Greg. I believe in everybody we have," Ryan said.
Sure he does. But he has to hand McElroy the reigns at this point. Doesn't he?
