The New York Jets have cut Aaron Maybin, the 24-year-old linebacker considered a lynchpin of their pass rush heading into the season.
Maybin has had a disappointing NFL career since being drafted 11th overall by the Buffalo Bills in 2009, just three years ago. He was cut after failing to record a single sack in two seasons with the Bills after the 2010 season, but resurrected his career and showed the promise he had out of Penn State in 2011. In his first year with the Jets, he recorded six sack in 13 games, forcing four fumbles and becoming a favorite with media for his quotes, including a claim earlier this season that the Jets would knock out Reggie Bush when the team faced off against the Miami Dolphins. In 2012, that play never materialized, only recording one tackle in 119 defensive snaps.
The Jets needed roster space to make room for Kahlil Bell with running backs Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight likely to miss Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams.
The team also added nickel back Isaiah Trufant to the injured reserve, after suffering a season-ending knee injury on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
