Santonio Holmes injury: Jets WR placed on injured reserve

Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a Lisfranc injury, officially ending his season.

Jason Bridge-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Reports surfaced Tuesday night that Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes was done for the year; the team made it official on Wednesday when the veteran was put on injured reserve, ending his season. Holmes suffered a Lisfranc injury in his left foot during New York's shutout loss to the 49ers, crumpling to the turf on a non-contact play. Head coach Rex Ryan said that initial X-rays were negative but that the team was holding out hope a thorough evaluation and MRI might bring positive news. The conclusion was a Lisfranc injury, which involves torn ligaments in the foot and requires surgery and months of recovery time.

The Jets' offense was already struggling with Mark Sanchez's top target in the lineup, but the loss is a huge blow to a team trying to right the ship after a 34-0 blowout. New York signed veteran wideout Jason Hill to take the spot of Holmes on the roster. Hill pulled in 25 catches for 367 yards and three touchdowns with the Jaguars last season before being released in November. He was cut by the Broncos after training camp this summer.
