Tom Coughlin On Losing Jake Ballard Off Waivers To New England Patriots: 'Discouraged Is A Minor Description'

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said during a press conference on Wednesday that he was "very disappointed" after the New England Patriots claimed tight end Jake Ballard on waivers.

"‘Discouraged' is a minor description," Coughlin said. "Very disappointing. I'm not going to have a lot to say about that one - just the fact that we are disappointed; very disappointed."

The Giants fully expected Ballard to clear waivers, but the Patriots swooped in to claim him as an addition to help them in the future.

"That's just the nature of the business," said Coughlin.

The way Ballard was lost prompted questions about whether the Giants should have left him on the 90-man roster despite a torn ACL expected to keep him off the field until 2013. The Giants risked losing Ballard by putting him on waivers, and Coughlin wouldn't shed any light on why they chose to do so.

"Don't ask me those questions," he said. " I don't have the answers for you there. We are all disappointed, that's all."
