Osi Umenyiora has fired agent Tony Agnone in the midst of his public squabble with the New York Giants over his current contract. Agnone represented the defensive end for five years before being let go. Umenyiora is seeking either a contract extension or a trade to another team with one year still left on his contract.
The inability to get a suitable new deal done appears to be the biggest factor in Agnone's firing.
"Fired is too harsh a word," Umenyiora wrote. "I just came to the conclusion that this situation I don't think he can help me with."
Umenyiora is due to make $3.925 million this season, much less than he feels he should be making as one of the league's elite defensive ends. The situation came to a head when defensive teammate Mathias Kiwanuka signed a four-year, $21.75 million deal that included nearly $11 million guaranteed. Umenyiora claimed that the Giants offered him half of Kiwanuka's guaranteed money.
