The New York Giants just learned that they will receive one 2012 NFL Draft compensatory pick in the 4th round of this year's NFL Draft.
The Giants selection will be the 36th selection (131st overall) of the 4th Round in the 2012 Draft.
The exact formula for how compensatory picks is handed out is not public information. What is known is that if a team loses more compensatory free agents than they pickup, that team is eligible to receive compensatory selections.
Here's a little more about how the formula is worked out:
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. (via NFL.com)
Since last season, the Giants lost Kevin Boss, Barry Cofield, Steve Smith and picked up David Baas and Steve Weatherford.
