The New York Giants have reportedly told disgruntled defensive end Osi Umenyiora that if they do agree to trade him they will be asking teams for a No. 1 draft pick in return.
Umenyiora, who skipped the first day of training camp, was in attendance for Sunday’s practice at the Timex Performance Center but did not participate.
Reports have indicated that Umenyiora, under contract for the next two seasons, wants a new deal or a trade. The two-time Pro Bowler had 11.5 sacked and 10 forced fumbles a season ago.
The Giants may also be tiring of negotiating with free-agent running back Ahmad Bradshaw. ESPN’s John Clayton reported that Bradshaw and the Giants "aren’t close." Pro Football Talk reported that the Giants have begun talking with four-year veteran Jason Snelling in the event they cannot sign Bradshaw. The report called the deal a "definite possibility."
Giants coach Tom Coughlin indicated Sunday that the Giants would not wait forever for Bradshaw, their leading rusher a season ago.
"If it's not going to be Ahmad, then it has to be perhaps someone else," Coughlin said.
Also Sunday, the Giants brought back David Carr, who was Eli Manning’s backup quarterback for two seasons before signing as a free agent last season with San Francisco. Carr could replace Sage Rosenfels as the backup.
