One down and three to go. New York Giants fans hoping the team will be able to hold on to hotly sought-after defensive coordinator Perry Fewell have to be happy this evening that Jim Harbaugh has taken the San Francisco 49ers head coaching job.
The 49ers were one of four teams who had expressed interest in Fewell possibly becoming their next head coach. Fewell is reportedly a front-runner in Carolina, and has interviews coming up with Denver and Cleveland.
Harbaugh, who had been at Stanford, was sought after by several teams with head-coaching vacancies. He turned down an opportunity to coach Michigan, his collegiate alma mater. He also turned down overtures from the Miami Dolphins.
Harbaugh, however accepted a deal with the 49ers reported to be worth $25 million over the next five seasons.
Harbaugh, who had a 15-year career as a journeyman quarterback with several teams, has been the head coach at Stanford for the past four seasons.
