The 7-2 New York Jets and the 6-3 New York Giants are busy worrying about trying to get to the playoffs and make runs at getting to the Super Bowl in Dallas next February. In the world of NFL fan-dom, however, it is never too early for a little NFL Draft speculation. With that in mind, the folks at SB Nation have put together a very early 2011 NFL Mock Draft.
Before we even get started looking at who the folks at the mothership have going to our New York teams, let's acknowledge that this is insanely early to make any sort of realistic projection. So, don't go and get all worked up if you think the pick is dumb. Anyway, with that in mind here we go.
The SB Nation mock projects the Giants as picking 25th and selecting Justin Houston, a defensive end from Georgia. SBN's 'Mocking the Draft' reacts this way:
"The only thing I don't like about this is the offensive tackles available. How long can New York get by with Shawn Andrews at left tackle?" I just don't see OT value here.
I don't know anything about Houston, but at first glance I would not like it if this was the pick. The Giants took DE Jason Pierre-Paul No. 1 last year, and they will likely have needs at linebacker, offensive line, running back and tight end. Still, the Giants have always loved their pass rushers, so anything is possible.
The mock has the Jets selecting 28th and grabbing Von Miller, a linebacker from Texas A&M. Mocking The Draft reacts this way:
They say Rex Ryan collects cornerbacks and pass rushers, and Miller is perhaps the most naturally gifted pass rusher in the nation. He should climb draft boards during February and March.
Probably right about Ryan. If a big-time play-making linebacker or defensive end is available to him, he might just jump.
