Giants' Placekicker Lawrence Tynes Sprains Ankle

New York Giants’ placekicker Lawrence Tynes says he should be able to kick Sunday against the Detroit Lions despite spraining his left, non-kicking, ankle during Friday’s practice.

Tynes is listed as questionable for Sunday.

Rookie punter Matt Dodge has collegiate experience kicking off, and limited placekicking experience.

He was a kickoff specialist in college at East Carolina and said he feels comfortable if he’s asked to do that again.

However, he only attempted one collegiate field goal (a miss) and one collegiate extra point (good). He can do it, because he did it in college, but he admitted "It won’t be pretty."

"I’m ready if I’m asked," Dodge said.

Mike Garafolo listed available placekickers, should the Giants need to go that route. The most obvious name on the list is John Carney, who kicked for the Giants in 2008 and was released this week by the New Orleans Saints.

As for whether the Giants would sign another kicker, coach Tom Coughlin said “I can’t tell you what I don’t know. We have to watch. We’ll have to see what he does.”
