The New York Giants added rookie running back Joe Martinek out of Rutgers to their practice squad on Tuesday. To make room for Martinek the Giants terminated the contract of defensive end Craig Marshall.
Martinek was signed by the Giants after going undrafted and spent all of preseason with the Giants before getting cut Aug. 27. He caught two passes in the preseason for 21 yards and a touchdown.
At Rutgers, Martinek rushed for 1,770 carries on 391 carries and had 17 touchdowns in 49 games. He also added 46 receptions for 448 yards and a score. His most productive season was his sophomore campaign, when he rushed 206 times for 967 yards.
Martinek, who can serve as a running back or undersized fullback, was signed after running back Andre Brown suffered a concussion in the Giants Week 5 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Marshall spent two stints on the Giants practice squad last season, and had been with the practice squad since Sept. 1 this year.
