The New Jersey Devils dropped their second consecutive game by a combined final score of 8-2 – on Thursday they lost to the Boston Bruins 4-1 and today they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers by an identical score of 4-1. The loss drops the Devils to 26-19-2. With 54 total points the Devils are currently the seven seed in the Eastern Conference, with a slight three point lead over ninth place Toronto.
Despite out-shooting the Flyers 31 to 20, out-hitting the Flyers 24 to 19 and forcing more takeaways than the Flyers, the Devils were routed because their abundance of penalty minutes – 47 to be exact. Two of the Flyers four goals were scored during a power play and one was scored on an empty net.
The Devils next game is January 24 against the Buffalo Sabers.
