The New Jersey Devils tried their best to put together a late-game charge Monday night, but a three-goal deficit entering the third period would be too much for the Devils to overcome in a 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. David Clarkson and Adam Henrique both netted third-period goals for the Devils (19-15-1, 39 points), who trailed by three entering the final 20 minutes, but an empty-net goal by Hurricanes' goaltender Cam Ward, who actually never took a shot but was credited with the goal anyhow, cemented the Carolina's second straight victory. New Jersey has lost two of the last three games.
Brandon Sutter scored the game's first goal for the Hurricanes (12-19-6, 30 points), while Tuomo Ruutu and Anthony Stewart each tallied goals in the second period, respectively, to give Carolina a 3-0 lead heading into the final period.
Clarkson finished the game with a goal and an assist for New Jersey.
