The New Jersey Devils said goodbye to their winning streak on Friday night at the Prudential Center in Newark after falling to the San Jose Sharks 4-3 in the shootout.
The Devils drop to 3-1-1 while the Sharks improve to 2-3-0.
After Douglas Murray was benched two minutes for roughing David Clarkson, Patrik Elias scored a 26-foot wristshot to put New Jersey up 1-0 in the first period.
Zach Parise backhanded one in to make it two-zip just 36 seconds into the second stanza, but San Jose answered later in the period with back-to-back goals from Joe Thornton and Ryane Clowe.
The Devils would tie it on David Clarkson’s backhand in the third period, sending both teams into overtime, where the nets would remain empty, forcing the shootout.
New Jersey drew first blood when Ilya Kovalchuk beat Antti Niemi; however, San Jose rallied back with unanswered goals from Michal Handzus and Ryane Clowe to seal the win.
