The Ottawa Senators lead the New Jersey Devils, 1-0, after one period in their game tonight at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.
Erik Karlsson put the Senators ahead at 15:30 of the period. A break-out pass intended for Ilya Kovalchuk skipped over his stick and went to the blue line. Karlsson corralled the puck at the point and put a shot on net. The puck went through a crowd of defenders and skipped past Martin Brodeur for Karlsson's fifth goal of the season.
The Sens outshot the Devils, 13-7, in the first period. Ottawa built their shot advantage on the strength of two powerplay attempts. The Devils killed off both penalties.
